Fosfomycin

Common use

Fosfomycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as acute cystitis or bladder infection in women. It is particularly effective against certain types of bacteria, such as escherichia coli and enterococcus faecalis, which commonly cause UTIs.

Dosage and direction

Take this medicine by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Mix the contents of package in 3 to 4 ounces (1/2 cup) of cold water, stir well and drink. Take this medicine with food or on an empty stomach. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Precautions

Consul with doctor if you have any of these conditions: kidney disease; an unusual or allergic reaction to fosfomycin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives; pregnant or trying to get pregnant; breast-feeding.

Contraindications

Fosfomycin can interact with diseases, including:
Colitis (inflammation of the colon);
Kidney dysfunction.

Possible side effect

Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible: allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue; breathing problems; changes in vision; fever, flu-like symptoms; unusually weak or tired; yellowing of eyes or skin.
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): diarrhea; dizziness; headache; runny nose; sore throat; stomach upset, nausea; vaginal itch or irritation.

Drug interaction

Fosfomycin can interact with medications, including:
Metoclopramide, a medication used to treat gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, and gastric emptying disorders.

Missed dose

If you forgot to take Fosfomycin, take it as soon as you remember. If the time for the next dosage is close, it is recommended to skip the missed one now and resume your regular dosage pattern. Never increase your dosage without consulting your doctor.

Overdose

If you takes an excessive amount of Fosfomycin by accident, it is essential to take immediate medical attention from your doctor or a nearby hospital. Symptoms of an overdose include diarrhoea, nausea, headache, dizziness, and vaginitis.

Storage

Keep out of the reach of children. Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
